I offer reflective practice groups to the fitness instructors working with the Prehab4Cancer programme. They were trained in S&T over a year ago. I met with them this morning for a reflective session. One instructor presented a case of a young man, in his 30s, going through chemo for a colorectal cancer. The instructor remembered to ask a question about what was going on for him (“A’ and ‘G’) and then be silent and listen. He reflected that this is something he remembered from the training that has stuck with him ever since and changed how he works with people who are struggling. He reflected that by doing so, he was really able to help this man who disclosed he was frightened and worried (emotional concerns). A great plan was devised to offer him some additional support (instructor ringing him twice a week and contacting his Clinical Nurse Specialist – the ‘Y’ and the ‘M”).
