Why compassion helps

How SAGE and THYME helps - an evolution psychology perspective

Compassion reduces the sense of threat and shifts attention towards “What is needed here?”

Our short video (a discussion between two clinical psychologists) describes ‘primitive’ human (and animal) responses to threat (flight/fight) and how the ‘compassionate other’ can reduce that sense of threat. Compassionate interactions can create feelings of safety and wellbeing. From that feeling of safety, collaborative problem solving can happen.

Drs Zoey Malpus and Padraig McDonnell describe this theory and how it may explain why the skills and structure used in SAGE & THYME conversations, help.

Dr Malpus will expand on her insights at our Annual Study Day next month.
